Ocean Institute Offers Spring Programs for Children
DANA POINT, CA, March 7, 2007 - The Ocean Institute offers a variety of exciting, educational spring camps for children ages 6 and older. Each program has been designed to fully utilize the Institute's state-of-the-art Ocean Education Center, its research vessel Sea Explorer, its two tallships, Pilgrim and Spirit of Dana Point and the nearby Dana Point Marine Life Refuge. Programs include:
Single Day Camps
Junior Neptunes (ages 6-8) - Children will discover the hidden world beneath the waves, including a look at marine critters from the smallest crab to the giant whale.
April 10, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. $65, members $58.
Junior Oceanographer (ages 9-12) - Become a marine biologist for the day, learning the principles of marine biology and oceanography. The day also includes a visit to the Dana Point Marine Life Refuge and a two-hour cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer .
April 10, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. $65, members $58.
A Pirate's Life (ages 8-11) - Children become pirates for the day, learning the basics of seamanship, shipboard life, rowing a long boat and even searching for hidden treasure!
April 6, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. $65, members $58.
Three Day Camp
Lil' Buccaneer Camp (ages 6-7) - Step into the world of pirates, buccaneers and sailors. Learn what life was like at sea during this exciting week filled with maritime activities, crafts, sea chanteys and much more.
April 10-12, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. $155, members $140.
Parent-child Overnight Camps
Pilgrim Overnight (age 8+) - Step back in time and experience life onboard a tall ship in the 1830s. Play the role of sailors and handle all of the ship's responsibilities.
April 28. $65, members $58.
Santa Barbara to Dana Point Overnight Sail (age 10+) - Sail along the coast of California. Learn seamanship, navigation, sail handling and standing watch.
April 29-30. $125, members $110.
Single-Day Parent/Child Programs
Mother's Day Brunch Sail (age 4+) - Enjoy a morning brunch onboard the tall ship Spirit of Dana Point.
May 13, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2 - 5 p.m. $45/adult, $30/child; members $40/adult, $25/child
Father's Day Catch-and-Release Fishing Trip (age 4+) An outdoor fishing adventure with dad onboard the R/V Sea Explorer.
June 17, 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. $35/adult, $30/child; members, $28/adult, $24/child.
Father's Day Treasure Hunt - (ages 4+) A sail onboard the tall ship, Spirit of Dana Point, combined with a treasure hunt starting at the Ocean Institute.
June 17, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2 - 5 p.m. $45/adult, $35/child; members, $40/adult, $30/child.

Open to the Public on Weekends - The Ocean Institute is open to the general public on Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Cost: $6 adults, $4 children ages 4-12. Or, with the purchase of a membership, a family can enjoy year-round free admission, benefit from member-only events and receive discounts on all other programs.
