Ocean Institute Names John Mrak 2007 Volunteer of the Year

DANA POINT, CA, May 15, 2007 - The Ocean Institute is pleased to announce that John Mrak of Lake Forest is its 2007 Volunteer of the Year. For nearly three years, John has been a volunteer instructor for several educational programs, including A House for a Hermit Crab, Big Al in the Lab, and the Marine Mammal Lab.

He is also certified in fluorometry, and volunteers onboard the RV Sea Explorer collecting and recording data for various research partnerships.

Karen Lloreda, Manager of Volunteer Services, observed, "John is wonderful with children and adults, volunteers and staff. He's thorough, always ready to lend a hand and is an easy person with whom to work. Our students have benefited tremendously from his contributions."

Mrak served 30 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant specializing in helicopter maintenance. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam. After his retirement from the Marine Corps, he worked 19 years as a technical writer in the aerospace industry.

Mrak toured the Ocean Institute shortly after his retirement four years ago. He liked what he saw, and began volunteering. It soon became a highlight of his week: "I love the interaction with the kids and the staff. I enjoy the whole experience."

He is also impressed with the Institute staff: "They're a great staff, professional, and always ready to share their knowledge. I learn something new every day."

Additional volunteers for the Ocean Institute are always welcome. Contact Karen Lloreda at (949) 496-2274, ext. 221.
