Ocean Institute Offers Exciting Tall Ship Summer Camps for Children Ages 8-17
DANA POINT, CA, May 9, 2008 - The Ocean Institute is offering three exciting tall ship summer camps for children. The programs use the Institute's two tallships, Pilgrim and Spirit of Dana Point:
Windjammer Adventure Camp (ages 8-10)
Learn traditional boating skills of the Golden Era of Sail. Weigh anchor, row, navigate, and sail historic San Juan Harbor (Dana Point), with a crew of fellow sailors. Practice the battle tactics of Lord Admiral Nelson and Sir Francis Drake and learn island survival skills used by marooned sailors.
A week-long camp, seven hours per day. Starting dates: June 30, July 7, 14, 28 and August 4 & 11. $285, or $255 for members of the Institute.
Multi-Day Overnight Camps
Island Bound Camp (ages 11-13)
Voyage to Catalina Island aboard the Spirit of Dana Point. Day 1 is spent at the Institute learning navigation, watch-standing skills and the responsibilities of the crew. Days 2-4 are spent sailing, hiking, snorkeling and learning nautical skills in Catalina.
Starting dates:
June 24, July 8. $415, or $370 for members of the Institute.
Catalina Tall Ship Challenge (ages 14-17)
Similar to Island Bound Camp, a more advanced sailing adventure wherein participants take greater control of the ship and join the working crew. Stand night watch, drive and work the ship, and enjoy snorkeling and kayaking off Catalina Island.
Starting dates: July 22. $415 or $370 for members of the Institute.
