Artist by the Sea: An Evening with Bob McKnight & Greg MacGillivray
DANA POINT, CA, Jan 8, 2010 - The Ocean Institute will dive into the surf culture with two pioneers, Bob McKnight and Greg MacGillivray, who helped introduce the sport to new audiences throughout the world, on Thursday, March 18, 7 p.m. McKnight, co-founder of Quiksilver, Inc., and IMAX filmmaker Greg MacGillivray, co-founder of MacGillivray Freeman Films, will take us on a journey from their early days of filming surf movies to the multi-billion dollar sport it has become.
Bob McKnight has turned his passion for surfing into a $2.5 billion company by creating Quiksilver, Inc., one of the world’s strongest lifestyle brands. Quiksilver, Inc. was the first boardriding company to break through a billion dollars in revenue, provide 100% sponsorship to its surfers, and the first to create a multi-media entertainment portal. McKnight will discuss his early adventures in filming surf movies and how it inspired him to launch the board sports lifestyle.
Greg MacGillivray is internationally known for producing some of the most popular IMAX films in the history of filmmaking, including Everest, The Living Sea, and Coral Reef Adventure, however, he got his start by making surf films such as Free and Easy and Five Summer Stories. In his upcoming film, MacGillivray re-visits his roots by filming a documentary of Hollywood’s relationship with the surfing industry.
The pair will share their passion for surfing, show surf images and film clips, and discuss how they successfully drew international attention to a sport that was mainly limited to coastal regions.
