2007 : Business of the Year Award
Dana Point Chamber of Commerce Names Ocean Institute "Business of the Year"
February 29, 2008, DANA POINT, Ca.
The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce has selected the Ocean Institute as Dana Point's "Business of the Year." The award recognizes the positive contribution the Ocean Institute has made to the Dana Point community. The Institute is the first non-profit organization to receive the award.
Dan Stetson, President of the Institute, remarked, "We're honored and grateful to the Chamber for this prestigious award. We're also grateful to the Dana Point community, whose continued support is vital to the work of the Ocean Institute. Without the generosity of so many supporters, and the time offered by our many volunteers, we would not be able to continue our work."
Jim Miller, owner of Coffee Importers of Dana Point, operates a coffee cart at the Institute on weekends, and regularly caters its events. He served on the award selection committee and himself is a former award winner. He remarked, "I have great affection for the Ocean Institute. I have seen firsthand its positive contribution to the Dana Point community."
He noted that the Ocean Institute's staff, volunteers and supporters include former and current community leaders. He concluded, "The Ocean Institute has touched everyone in the community in some way."
Founded in 1977, the Ocean Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to ocean preservation through education, setting the standard for educational excellence and serving as a leading resource for universities, museums, teachers and all others seeking to increase their knowledge of the ocean. It has a staff of 120 and over 400 volunteers.
During the week, it offers ocean science and maritime history programs to students; on the weekends, the Institute is open to the public. Award-winning programming includes year-round ocean science and tall ship programs for children, an annual Girls in Science program that introduces teen girls to careers in oceanography by female scientists in the field, an annual watershed program that teaches 5th graders the importance of caring for our ocean environment, tall ship experiences for children and adults, marine mammal cruises onboard the Institute's R/V Sea Explorer, ocean science and ocean art exhibitions for weekend visitors and special lectures and events by presenters in accord with the Institute's mission.
