2005 : Black Jellies
August 3 - Ocean Institute Collects Rare Black Jellies and Attempts to Breed Them
Ocean Institute scientists have begun their collection and study of black jellyfish or black sea nettles (Chrysaora achlyos) which have washed up in large numbers on Orange County beaches, particularly in Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. Additionally, Institute aquarist Julianne Steers is attempting to breed the mysterious black jellies, which she collected near Dana Point Harbor. Steers has a Scientific Collecting Permit issued by the California Department of Fish and Game which allows her to legally collect ocean wildlife for study and display to the public. The Institute currently breeds moon jellies successfully.
