Pilgrim mast2003 : Pilgrim Restoration

July - Re-Rigging Her Rugged Good Looks Ocean Institute Maritime volunteers rally round the mast The volunteer crew of the Ocean Institute's Tall Ship, Pilgrim, moored in the Dana Point harbor at the foot of the Headlands, has launched a fund raising effort to restore the ship to sailing condition. Recognizing the negative impact the cost of replacement would have on this nonprofit organization, the volunteers resolved to establish a fund raising drive to defray the cost of a new mast as well as other future restoration needs. During a routine maintenance examination last spring, it was discovered that the Pilgrim's foremast was rotting and in danger of collapse. Volunteers launched an effort to replace the foremast, which involved de-rigging and re-rigging of the ship, and raising the funds needed to complete the project. Arrival of the new foremast is a major step in the effort to preserve the vessel. "This is an important moment in the effort to restore the Pilgrim," observed Bentley Cavazzi, Ocean Institute Director of Communications. "We're excited to have reached this stage, and look forward to seeing the Pilgrim at sail again in the New Year. As we noted last spring, the Pilgrim will sail again!" The cost of the new foremast is estimated at $30,000. An additional $170,000 is needed to defray costs of next year's biannual haul-out and essential structural restoration work.
