2001 : Ocean Institute Acquires 2nd Tall Ship
2001 May 8 - Pilgrim Of Newport
Cast off the dock lines and raise the sails, the Ocean Institute's nationally recognized Maritime Living History programs are expanding to include sailing programs. The Pilgrim of Newport is an excellent learning platform for students of all ages to directly experience life at sea as it has been for hundreds of years.
2001 Wednesday, November 28 - OCEAN INSTITUTE TO CHRISTEN ITS NEWEST TALLSHIP IN PATRIOTIC CEREMONY
On Saturday, December 8, at seven bells (3:30 pm), Dana Point City Council Member Ingrid McGuire will swing the traditional bottle of champagne and christen the Ocean Institute's newly acquired tallship, the " Spirit of Dana Point." The event will take place (rain or shine) at the Ocean Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive in Dana Point Harbor. All members of the community are invited to attend what promises to be a patriotic and inspirational celebration. The ceremony will begin with a striking presentation by a detachment of the Sons of the American Revolution and their historic Color Guard and Fife and Drum Corps. Soloist Audrey Contaldi will sing the National Anthem and the Dana Hills High School choir is also expected to perform. After a formal dedication by Mayor Harold Kaufman, a booming musket and cannon salute will signal the beginning of a new era for this historic tallship, the Ocean Institute, and the City of Dana Point. The Spirit of Dana Point (formerly the Pilgrim of Newport) was built in Costa Mesa by Master Shipwright Dennis Holland and launched in 1983; she took 13 years to complete. The Spirit of Dana Point is a 118-foot, full-scale replica of a 1770's Revolutionary War Privateer, reminiscent of a time when America fought for freedom and gained world recognition. In March 2001, the Ocean Institute purchased the tallship to expand and enhance its national award-winning living history programs.
