2005 : Jumbo Squid
January 26 - Ocean Institute Scientist to Dissect Jumbo Squid for Public Jan. 30,
Ocean Institute scientist Linda Blanchard will dissect another jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas), which washed up on the beach at Crystal Cove State Park, for the general public on Sunday, January 30, 1 p.m. at the Institute, 24200 Dana Point Harbor Drive, Dana Point. The purpose of the dissection is to examine the squid's stomach contents, as knowing what they're eating may help determine why they have migrated north. Blanchard will be available to answer questions. Blanchard dissected squids for the public last weekend. Her initial examination revealed nothing unusual about the squids, as their stomachs contained their usual diet of sardines and anchovies. The contents of the squid's stomachs was frozen and is en route to Hopkins Marine Station at Stanford University. Dr. William Gilly, a professor of biology and an expert on squids, will continue the examination in the upcoming weeks.
