7th Annual Build-A-Boat Challenge
Saturday, Oct. 1st, 2011
The Ocean Institute will present its seventh annual Build-A-Boat Challenge, a one-day contest in which participants design, build and race their own boats. This exciting event raises funds for the preservation of the Institute's two tall ships, Pilgrim and Spirit of Dana Point. The two ships host thousands of school children in award-winning, living history programs.
The event combines design ability, construction skills and seamanship into a fun competition. Up to 20 teams will participate, competing against each other and the clock to build and race a seaworthy vessel. Each team is supplied with lumber and plans and given four hours in which to build a boat. Once the boats are completed, they are taken to Baby Beach where everyone participate
in heats.
To participate, entrants are asked to secure sponsorship totaling a minimum of $3,000.
