Employment Opportunities at the Ocean Institute
Science Instructor
Join us at our state-of-the-art seaside learning center in Dana Point and at the Lazy W Ranch, our outdoor teaching facility in the Cleveland National Forest. Help guide our students as they immerse themselves in the exploration of marine science, oceanography, California history, and ecology through a variety of hands-on programs, including:
- Offshore investigations on our floating laboratory, RV/Sea Explorer
- Marine science discoveries at our onshore laboratory and at the Dana Point Marine Life Refuge
- California cultural history explorations at the Lazy W Ranch in the Cleveland National Forest
- Southern California ecology and biology investigations during our Outdoor Education programs
Qualifications and Experience
- Four-year degree in science or education (equivalent relevant experience may be acceptable).
- Applicant should have experience working with or teaching groups of young people.
- Applicant should be self-motivated, quick thinking, adaptable, curious and have a sense of humor.
- Background or coursework in biology, marine biology, geology, oceanography, ecology or education is a plus!
Conditions of Employment
- Approximately 30-40 hours per week (varies week to week).
- Wage starts at $10.70 per hour with possible increases to $14.00 per hour.
- Up to two overnights per week and some weekend work may be required.
- Meets specific physical requirements of assigned programs.
- Must be certified in CPR and First Aid.
- Must be willing to participate in drug-testing program.
- Must be able to bend, stoop, prolonged standing and lift up to of 25 lbs. unassisted
