Ocean Institute

The Ocean Institute is an ocean education center that offers in-depth Marine Science, Maritime History and Outdoor Education programs. The facility includes state-of-the-art teaching labs, the spectacular Maddie James Seaside Learning Center, two historic tallships, and an oceanographic research vessel. Immersion-based field trips range from one-hour science labs to multi-day programs at sea. All programs are designed to maximize immersion, spark curiosity, and inspire a deep commitment to learning.

Ocean-based exhibits are open to the public seven days a week. Visitors can explore the underwater world while participating in fun activities designed to indulge ocean curiosity. Throughout the year, the Ocean Institute also offers organized family programs, summer camps, cruises, tallship sails, and other unique events including our annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival and the Festival of Whales.

Join us for a summer to remember! Young scientists and buccaneers will love our fun, unique camps, as they are immersed in our educational and exciting programming. Our ACA accredited camps are taught by our amazing team of First Aid Certified instructors with a low student to instructor ratio, so your child is safe, engaged, and having a great time while they are learning from the best!

Family Science Nights
Tuesdays at 6pm

Spend a summer evening with local scientists. Workshops include a presentation by a guest speaker and activities for kids, followed by a lab program to introduce you to the fascinating world of science.

31st Annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival

Tall Ships Festival – Sept. 12 & 13

Join us in celebrating our 31st year hosting the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival. Explore the majesty and wonder of life at sea through the sights and sounds of working tall ships. Interactive living-history encampments, including blacksmiths, scrimshaw artists, knot tiers, and the infamous Port Royal Privateers, are sure to entertain and amaze guests of all ages.

Shark Month – August

Celebrate Shark Month with shark-themed activities during our Weekend Public Program. Determine what is myth vs. fact and learn about shark conservation efforts. Activities are included with general weekend admission.
On Saturday, August 22 at 12pm Dana Roeber Murray from Heal the Bay will host a presentation on conservation and Heal the Bay's Shark Ambassador Program. More Info >

W e are proud to present Headlands and Beyond: A Hands-On Exploration, a new exhibit that is open to the public seven days a week. Explore our marine-themed atrium and whale court while participating in fun, family activities designed to indulge your ocean curiosity. On weekends, we continue to offer a site-wide, immersive journey into the mysteries of the Pacific Ocean
