Membership Lecture Event
Thursday, February 16th, 2012 - 6:30 PM
Guest speaker Dr. Karen Martin will showcase the new film: Surf, Sand, and Silversides: the California Grunion
The film documentary shows the elusive but spectacular natural phenomenon of midnight spawning runs, and the challenges facing this charismatic surfing fish and its nests on urban beaches of California. In a world where fish come out of the water, one species stands between life and death. One species, one spawning habitat, one moonlit night, this is the story of how far these fish will go for love. Leaving the see in droves, they risk all in search of passion.
The film won 1st place Documentary Short at the Los Angeles City Cinema Fest. For additional information on beach spawning grunion please visit. http://grunion.pepperdine.edu.
Reservations are required and space is limited. Please call Alexis at (949) 496-2274 x 610 or sign up online here!

An evening with Dr. Stan Cummings
November 28, 2011 - 7PM
Sailing Home
… to the Orange County Marine Institute
Join us November 28th as we look back in time to the origins of the Ocean Institute, as current President Dan Stetson introduces former President Dr. Stan Cummings.
In the early-1980s, Dr. Cummings took the helm of the Orange County Marine Institute (presently the Ocean Institute). He was charged with taking a then fledgling organization to a position of financial strength and programming excellence. The award-winning science, maritime, and outdoor education programs currently in use at the Ocean Institute -- including K-12 curriculum, teacher education programs, and hands-on exhibits -- were established under his leadership.
Come reminisce with us about the Ocean Institute’s humble beginnings, as Dr. Cummings shares stories of his adventures and how he established our local treasure. From the arrival of the iconic Brig Pilgrim to tales of students at sea, the evening will be filled with fun stories and cherished memories.
Admission is free, however registration is required by calling (949) 496-2274 or Click here to sign up on-line |
