Jazz in January
Friday & Saturday, January 29 & 30, 2010
The Ocean Institute is pleased to announce the 8th Annual Jazz in January event, being held on January 29 & 30. Jonathan Butler, a gifted singer, two-time Grammy nominated songwriter, guitarist, and producer, will entertain jazz enthusiasts for two unforgettable evenings. Opening night features a wine and appetizer reception compliments of Il Fornaio and a concert performance. Saturday evening features an intimate performance for 200 guests, cocktail reception, silent & live auctions, and an award-winning, four-course dinner prepared by chefs from The St. Regis Resort Monarch Beach, The Laguna Cliffs Resort & Spa, The Montage Resort, Laguna Beach, and The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel.

Spring Camp and Seasonal Cruise Registration Open for Members Only!
January 6th
Adventure awaits you! Enroll your child in one of our popular Spring Camps for a day filled with fun, learning, and memorable experiences.
Junior Neptune's Camp (age 6-8) - Session A
April 8th | 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Discover exciting marine wildlife and conduct investigations in underwater adaptations as we mix popular children's litterature with hands-on observations, inlcuding a special adventure aboard the R/V Sea Explorer to view the local sea lions.
Junior Neptune's Camp (age 6-8) - Session B
April 9th | 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Explore the depths of the sea and meet marine critters, from the crabs of the tipepools to the giant whales of the open ocean, as we look into the world of fact and fiction using popular children's literature. Experiment in labs and walk into the Dana Point Marine Protected Area.
Junior Seahawks Camp (age 9-12)
April 8th | 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Set a course for adventure as your discover the life of a tallship sailor during the Golden Age of Sail. Travel back in time on this dockside program aboard the Brig Pilgrim as you raise sail, race long boats, explore a sea cave and much more!
Junior Oceanographer Camp (age 9-12)
April 9th | 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
 Step into the fascinating world of a marine scientist as you take a cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, walk through the tidepools, and experience hands-on laboratory activities.

Archaeology Festival
January 9th & 10th
Join the Ocean Institute and the Archaeological Institute of America on an exploration into the fascinating world of archaeology! This two-day, family-oriented event will highlight archaeological discovery through a series of programs and activities designed for anyone interested in learning about ancient cultures, local history, archaeological techniques, technology, and cultural preservation.
Spend the day participating in hands-on exhibits throughout the Ocean Institute. Admission tickets available at the door. Member admission is free! General admission is $6.50/adults; $4.50/children. Enhance your experience by taking your family on a Living History Sail aboard the Spirit of Dana Point. Living History Sail space is limited, children must be at least four years old to participate in the sail. Sail price - $38.50/adults; $21.50/children (age 4-12)

Girls in Ocean Science
Registration Now Open!
The popular Ocean Institute event is back for its 5th year! This exciting conference, to be held February 6, 2010, is dedicated to inspiring young women, grades 8 to 12, to pursue degrees and careers in the sciences, and to foster an increased awareness of global climate change. Prominent female ocean and climate scientists from around the country will interact with the girls on our research vessel, R/V Sea Explorer, and in the Ocean Institute's teaching labs.
Underwater Parks Day
January 16th
The Ocean Institute will join in the celebration of the 2nd Underwater Parks Day on Saturday, January 16, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Southern California aquariums and marine science centers are joining together to help all Southern Californians learn more about the soon-to-be-designated underwater parks or marine protected areas.
Staff at the Ocean Institute, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, Birch Aquarium/Museum at Scripps in La Jolla, Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History’s Ty Warner Sea Center and the SeaLife Aquarium in Carlsbad are working together to present engaging exhibits, activities and materials about marine protected areas that will be shared with visitors.
