Chestnut Cowry
The Chestnut Cowry (Cypraea spadicea) lives on exposed rocky shores and tucked beneath rock ledges of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. This species of sea snail is relatively common in Southern California. The adult shell of this species ranges in size from 4cm to 6.5cm.
You will often discover this snail with its fleshy mantle encasing its shell. The mantle is usually ornamented with papillae that provide camouflage and assist in respiration. The mantle polishes the surface of the shell and is a deterent for hitch hikers, such as algae and barnacles, that might seek residence on this prime real estate.
Cowries usually remain hidden during the day in holes, dead coral heads, rubble, or under rocks and emerge at night to feed with the mantle fully extended.
