Fragile Sea Star
Sea stars come in all shapes and sizes, colors, and abilities. Many of you are familiar with the larger species that you see while visiting tide pools. Throughout the aquaria you will discover a smaller species of sea star. The fragile sea star (Linckia columbiae) is a slender-armed sea star that is found in crevices on shallow reefs and under rocks on the reef flat. A detritus feeder, it picks up fine organic debris from the bottom. The small, weak tube feet that line the groves on the undersides of the arms transfer food to the mouth in the center of the disc.
The fragile sea star has quite the unique behavior. Usually possessing the ‘normal’ five arms like most other sea stars, the fragile sea star is often found with four, six, or even one arm. This variability is a result of this species' exceptional ability to regenerate damaged arms and/or to shed individual arms as a means of asexual reproduction. The cause of the breaking is obscure. Without notice and whatever the stimulus, the fragile sea star will break off an arm and move on its merry way. While scuba diving and even in our collection, it is not unusual to find these sea stars in all stages of arm replacement. Individuals with one long and four short arms are sometimes called "comets" because of their resemblance to a shooting star. The single arm lives just the same as a five arm fragile sea star while the rest of its arms grow to full size. While sea stars are well known for their regenerative abilities, most need part of the central disc to survive. Linckia species are among just a few sea stars that can regenerate an entire star from a single arm.
Peer into our aquaria and count how many arms you see on each fragile sea star!

Prominent female ocean and climate scientists from around the country will interact with the girls on our research vessel, R/V Sea Explorer, and in the Ocean Institute's teaching labs.
