Aquarist's Corner
Rainbow Scorpionfish
The scorpionfish family is particularly well-represented off the Orange County coast. Most residents are familiar with the California Scorpionfish as it is common to our local fisheries. California Scorpionfish (Scorpaena guttata) have long been a mainstay in our collection at the Ocean Institute. Recently, we have introduced a less robust member of the scorpionfish family. The Rainbow Scorpionfish (Scorpaenodes xyris) is a smaller variety of its more commonly seen cousin.
This species may be found from southern California to the Galapagos; however, it is considered uncommon in our temperate waters. Like all scorpionfishes, the Rainbow Scorpionfish is well-known for it's venomous spines that are capable of inflicting serious or even fatal wounds. They are ambush predators of fishes and crustaceans, using cryptic coloration to sit motionless until prey blunders into range. This attempt to be fairly cryptic at night is overshadowed during the day by its flashy colors that make it more obvious to potential predators.
Found in cracks, crevices, other recesses on rocky reefs, and under ledge overhangs makes our specimen a peculiar one to watch. From a variety of rocks, pipe, and other tank inhabitants, our Rainbow Scorpionfish spends the day nestling next to whatever it can find that will have its company and, occasionally, that means hanging upside-down in comfort.
Read more about the specimens you can find at the Ocean Institute in the Aquarist Blog.
