The Sawdust Festival

The Sawdust Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public and promoting the art created in Laguna Beach.

Since its inception, the nonprofit Sawdust Art Festival organization has celebrated and supported the work of local artists. Hobie Alter started out shaping surfboards, he ended up shaping a culture. Considering this is the story of one man’s great imagination, to fully grasp the story of Hobie you need to start by using your imagination. Imagine it is summer vacation 1950 and young Hobart “Hobie” Alter hits on an idea to bring together his two loves, woodshop and water. He asks his dad to pull the Desoto out of the family’s Laguna Beach, California garage, and the history of surfing was about to enter a new era. The MIT Deep Water Archaeology Research Group, DeepArch, is developing methodology for archaeological investigations in the deepest parts of the world’s oceans (to 6,000m deep) using advanced sensors, robotics, and submersibles. DeepArch conducts research that includes archaeologists, historians, engineers, and oceanographers, so that the challenge of working in deep water can be approached from all angles. Leaders in these fields are brought together through lectures, conferences, and expeditions, to investigate the tools and methods needed to study this complex discipline.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography

Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for marine science research, graduate training, and public service in the world.

Research at Scripps encompasses physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans.
