Panning for New Experiences

Panning for GoldGold Digger's Express!

Grades 4-5
Students embark on a dynamic adventure reenacting the seafaring voyage of the men and women who risked it all for the gold fields in 1849. Students explore the events of the California Gold Rush while interacting with period characters who offer unique historical perspectives. Student crews are challenged to work together to raise sail, row in the longboats, pan for gold, and move cargo. Sailing option for the day program is also available.

Passage to the Mother Lode

Grades 4-5
An overnight version of our Gold Digger's Express, this exciting voyage of discovery offers additional fun activities that include: going up the mast in a boatswain's chair, standing night watch, chantey singing, journal keeping, and engaging in a morning debate. At the end of their journey, students must decide if they wish to stay aboard with the Captain or try their "fate" in the gold fields!

Time Capsule Day Program

Grade 4
At the Lazy W Ranch, students step into the lives of early Californians to learn about the state's first settlers, and then try to strike it rich in the Gold Rush! Students enjoy hiring a trail guide, negotiating for supplies in Sam Brannan's store, and panning for gold in a mountain stream.

Grade 4
Experience the thrill of Gold Fever at the Lazy W Ranch and discover how California changed from the time of the Native Americans to the Gold Rush. Students enjoy negotiating for supplies in Sam Brannan's store, panning for gold in a mountain stream, and sleeping in rustic miners' cabins.

By the Great Horn Spoon!

Grades 4-5
Students travel from the "Eastern Seaboard" to the "gold fields" of California to seek their fortune. They must band together to fulfill their dreams as they re-live the Gold Rush on this educational journey! This 2-day overnight adventure takes students on a "voyage around the Horn" on an historic tall ship, lets them barter for supplies in "San Francisco," and pan for gold in a mountain stream. The program takes place aboard Spirit of Dana Point, at the Ocean Institute, and at the Lazy W Ranch.
