Outdoor Education, Nature is the Classroom!

Research indicates that students who participate in Outdoor Education programs have increased concentration, resistance to stress and confidence.

The dynamic nature of the Outdoor Education experience provides a unique opportunity for educators and students to address state standards of education while also broadening perspectives about the environment and enhancing personal and social development.

RV Sea ExplorerCalifornia Time Capsule Overnight

Grade 4
Beginning at Mission San Juan Capistrano and continuing to the Lazy W Ranch, students investigate the cultural eras of California's history. Students step into the historical lives of the Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and Anglo people and explore their daily lives, customs and cultural practices. Activities include building a Native American shelter, making tortillas and candles, and panning for gold in a mountain stream! Also available as a single day program.

By the Great Horn Spoon!

Grades 4-5
In this new program, students travel from the "Eastern Seaboard" to the "gold fields" of California to seek their fortune. Students must band together to fulfill their dreams as they re-live the Gold Rush on this educational journey! This 2-day overnight adventure takes students on "a voyage around the Horn" on an historic tall ship, lets them barter for supplies in "San Francisco" and pan for gold in a mountain stream. Program takes place aboard the Spirit of Dana Point, at the Ocean Institute, and at the Lazy W Ranch.

Chaparral to Ocean Science School

Grades 4-6
During this 2 or 3-day program, students investigate six Southern California ecosystems at the Lazy W Ranch and at the Ocean Institute. Students become field biologists and employ the tools and techniques used for collecting and assessing field data. Students identify biotic and abiotic characteristics and relationships specific to the riparian, oak woodland, chaparral, intertidal, benthic, and pelagic ecosystems. Evening highlights include a night hike and a traditional campfire experience. Activities can be tailored to fit your needs and may include scientific investigations of food webs, water quality, plate tectonics, internal anatomy of fish, and much more! Also available as a single day program.

The Scientific Method

Grades 6-12
During this single day program, students step into the shoes of field biologists as they design their own experiment and master the Scientific Method. Students use real scientific tools and techniques as they develop a hypothesis, choose proper equipment, collect and interpret data, and then present their findings to a conference of their peers. Experiments can be tailored to fit your needs and may include botany, soil quality, water quality, wildlife research, stream investigations, and much more!

The serene setting of the Lazy W Ranch in the Cleveland National Forest provides the ideal location to immerse students in explorations of California's colorful history and its natural environment!
