Field Trips

War of 1812

Grade 8
Three and one half hours, $1225 (add $200 for extension) for up to 45 participants

“Free Trade and Sailors’ Rights is our song!” Sign aboard the schooner Spirit of Dana Point for a sailing adventure exploring the War of 1812. During this dynamic 3.5-hour tallship experience, students work as a crew to raise sail, handle line, navigate, work the helm, and fire the ship’s cannon while investigating key issues that sparked this historical conflict including free trade and impressment. Designed to meet current California Department of Education State Standards, this living-history program is based on actual characters and events.

A shoreside pre-program may be added. The 1.5 hour add-on includes lessons in navigation/charting, history, and the physics of sailing.
