Shore Crab to Tall Ships Self Guided Harbor Tour

Have you booked a 1-hour LiteraSea program and would you like to extend your time at the Ocean Institute? Take your students on a self-guided trip along Dana Point Harbor to discover evidence of tides, learn historic highlights of our tallship fleet, and find shore crabs among the rocks. This activity is free of charge, but you must be enrolled in a 1-hour K-3 program and reserve the needed materials with your program reservations.

The Teacher Information booklet can be viewed on our web site so you are prepared to lead the tour. When you arrive at the Ocean Institute you will check in at Visitor Services and sign out a backpack with two Teacher Information booklets and a dozen Student ID Sheets per program. When you are finished with the tour, return the equipment to Visitor Services. There will be a charge for equipment not returned.

How to use the Teacher Information booklet:
Dana Point Harbor, Tall shipThe Teacher Information booklet is for you and/or your chaperones to use to conduct a self-guided tour of the harbor area outside the Ocean Institute. The tour booklet includes a map with the suggested locations to stop for each station. The distance between the first and last station is 250 yards. Some stations can be done anywhere you see the subjects. Each station page includes sections on: "What to see", "What to do", and "What to know". It also includes the pictures or diagrams that will be on the Student ID Sheets. Read over this information so you are prepared to lead the tour. It is not necessary to print this file unless you want more than the two copies we will provide for you at check in.

The Student ID Sheets are a set of ring-bound, laminated pages with pictures of the subjects for each station. We will provide you with twelve Student ID Sheets per program, not per each school class. They will need to be shared among students. The students will use these to identify the subjects at each station. Each page in the Student ID Sheets is one station so the pictures are larger than the pictures in the Teacher Information booklet.
