Field Trips
Chaparral to Ocean Science School 2 Day
Grades 4-6
During this 2 or 3-day program, students explore and investigate six different living systems at the rustic Lazy W Ranch in the Cleveland National Forest and at the Ocean Institute. Students become field biologists and employ the tools and techniques used for collecting and assessing field data. They identify biotic and abiotic characteristics and relationships specific to the riparian, oak woodland, chaparral, intertidal, benthic, and pelagic ecosystems. Students also participate in a night hike and traditional campfire. Activities can be tailored for your program and include scientific investigations of food webs, water quality, plate tectonics, internal anatomy of fish, and much more!
Note: This program takes place at the Lazy W Ranch, the At Sea Learning Center at the Ocean Education Center, the Dana Point Marine Life Refuge, and the R/V Sea Explorer.
