Field Trips

Coastal Explorer Overnight

A Day in the ChaparralGrade 4
(grade 5 adaptable) Seventeen hours, $2550 for up to 45 participants ($2625 for Fall and $2650 from Jan 08 - June 08)

We combine the Coastal Explorer Lab with additional activities to investigate coastal processes and ecosystems. A longshore current model simulates sand moving along the coast as students build jetties and groins, and alter current flow. Our coastal watershed model allows students to trace non-point source pollution from the mountains to the ocean. The day ends with dinner and a campfire. Fall asleep to the sound of waves breaking on the beach at our coastal observation base camp. The next morning students board the R/V Sea Explorer for a Coastal Explorer Cruise.
