Passage to the Mother Lode

A Day in the ChaparralGrades 4-5
Eighteen hours, $2625 for up to 45 participants ($2675 for programs Jan. - June 2008)

The year is 1849 and the world is abuzz with talk of gold in California! Off to make their fortunes, students will attempt to find a sailing vessel that will take them to San Francisco by way of Cape Horn. Wandering the docks of Boston, fortune-hunters are approached by a man calling himself an agent for a shipping company. Is this man a "crimp" who will trick students into a situation of bad pay for hard labor under a mean captain? In addition to learning valuable skills such as rowing, handling lines and gold-panning, students must still survive the Captain and the Horn!
