Field Trips
Pushes and Pulls
Grade 2
One hour, $375 for up to 40 participants. ($385 for programs Jan. - June 2008)
This exciting new program addresses the physics of things that "Push and Pull!" Onboard and around a historic tall ship, students use scientific investigation to explore the properties of friction, buoyancy, gravity, leverage and magnetic force. Students study friction by learning to handle lines on deck and work an inclined plane, study gravity and buoyancy by building a ship's hull and testing it in a barrel of oak-water, use real tall ship simple machines as leverage to hoist hundreds of pounds of cargo attached to different pulley combinations, and will dispel some mysteries of the sea by learning how magnetic force can push and pull objects without touching them. Teachers will be provided with pre- and post- assessment materials.
