OCEAN INSTITUTE’S DISTINGUISHED SPEAKER SERIES TO FEATURE THE ONLY WOMAN TO ROW SOLO ACROSS THE “BIG THREE” OCEANS

DANA POINT (November 9, 2018)– The Ocean Institute is excited to announce the inspiring Roz Savage as The Nicholas Endowment Distinguished Speaker Series’ next lecturer. Named “Adventurer of the Year,” by National Geographic in 2010, Savage has rowed over 15,000 miles and spent over 500 days of her life at sea in a 23-foot rowboat.

OCEAN INSTITUTE SEES HUNDREDS OF VISITORS FOR HIKIANALIA VOYAGING CANOE WELCOMING

Dana Point, CA – Ocean Institute’s welcoming of the Hikianalia Voyaging Canoe proved a big hit with visitors.  Hundreds gathered to experience a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity to watch Hikianalia sail into the Dana Point Harbor yesterday.

Ocean Institute granted $1 million by the Sahm Family Foundation to establish shark education center

Dana Point, CA:  A leader in hands-on education in Orange County for more than forty years, Ocean Institute will introduce shark education to its inventory of popular school and public programs in order to enrich the lives of more children as a result of a $1 million grant from the Sahm Family Foundation. This grant will make it possible for Ocean Institute to renovate an existing waterfront building to feature a Horn shark touch tank, a shark nursery, and interactive exhibits and artifacts related to sharks.

Ocean Institute and Nicholas Endowment partner with GRIP

Ocean Institute has partnered with Nicolas Endowment and Orange County Gang Reduction and Intervention to bring 200 students from eight schools to experience a sailor’s life on the ocean.  Just a day before the Tall Ships Festival is set to start, these students, many who have never visited the ocean, will set sail on The Spirit of Dana Point and other visiting ships and learn what it takes to work on these vessels just as sailor’s decades before did in their ocean quests.

Dr. Chris Lowe – Science Advisory Council
Professor, marine biology & Director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach

Dr. Chris Lowe is a professor in marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), where he and his students work with acoustic and satellite telemetry techniques to study the movement, behavior and physiology of sharks, rays and gamefishes.

Dr. Lowe earned his Bachelor of Arts in marine biology at Barrington College in Rhode Island and a Master of Science degree in biology at CSULB. In 1998, he achieved a doctorate in zoology, studying bioenergetics of juvenile hammerhead sharks, at the University of Hawaii.

Welcoming Dr. Wendy Marshall as Vice President of Education

Twenty years after her first school field trip to the Dana Point Harbor as a 4th grade bilingual teacher in Paramount USD, Dr. Wendy Marshall returns to Dana Point and the Ocean Institute as Vice President of Education. Marshall has worked in diverse educational settings, including educational publishing, the College Board, the University of Southern California, and more recently as Director of Education at Ocean Quest (formerly ExplorOcean/Newport Harbor Nautical Museum).

A Fascinating Evening with David Helvarg

The Ocean Institute kicked off our new lecture series with author, activist, and adventurer David Helvarg last night in the intimate setting of the Institute’s Headlands & Beyond Kelp Forest. 

Helvarg was introduced by friend and artist Wyland, before screening a thought provoking short film of how his vision for the book The Golden Shore came to be. Helvarg noted that his videography skills were not of the caliber of filmmakers Greg and Barbara MacGillivray who were members of the audience.

Help Us Keep Whales Safe with the ‘Whale Alert App’

Some lucky swimmers and paddlers were recently treated with a visit from a juvenile gray whale that swam into the Dana Point Harbor—right up to the beach! Luckily, the whale finally made its way back out to the open waters and is hopefully back on track to summer feeding grounds in Alaska. Marine mammals such as this gray whale, rely heavily on hearing to navigate, and often noisy boat traffic can be disorienting.

Dana Point, Calif. – August 8, 2017The Ocean Institute, Orange County’s leading marine science, education, and maritime history center, will host a ‘welcome back’ celebration for Ocean Institute volunteer Ron Hoffmeyer, and Dr. Jeff Hughes and his son Austin Hughes. The three will stand up paddle approximately 25 miles from Catalina to Dana Point in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Institute. Donate to their GoFundMe here.

Harvey Mudd College Robot Deployment at Ocean Institute

 

Dana Point, California – On Saturday April 22 the Ocean Institute hosted 85 sophomore engineering students from Harvey Mudd College along with their designed remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). The Ocean Institute dock was turned into a robot workstation as students raced against the clock to use their ROVs to collect data including temperature, salinity, and currents.

Harvey Mudd College Professor of Engineering, Chris Clark, said Saturday was the final deployment of the robots, and was the culminating experience for students enrolled in the course.

Jim “Skip” Wehan honored by City
Ocean Institute Captain presented Dana Point Community Award

Ocean Institute’s Captain of the Spirit of Dana Point and the Pilgrim, Jim “Skip” Wehan, will be honored with the Dana Point Community Award from the City of Dana Point.  

Skip has dedicated his life to community outreach and developing the Dana Point Sea Scout Mariners 936 program over the past 40 years. As Captain at the Ocean Institute, Skip has provided thousands to children the thrill of setting sail at sea aboard a tall ship.

Ocean Institute Names Dan Pingaro New President and CEO

Dana Point, Calif. – April 10, 2017 – The Ocean Institute, Orange County’s leading marine science, education, and maritime history center, today announced its Board of Directors named Dan Pingaro as its new president and CEO after completing a nationwide search. Pingaro, who will assume his new position on April 24, 2017, most recently served as executive director of Laguna Beach Community Foundation (LBCF) for three years.

Ocean Institute Mourns The Loss Of Captain Arturo Zamarripa

DANA POINT, CA –­ It is with great sadness that the Ocean Institute announces the death of Arturo Zamarripa, 33, captain of the Institute’s tall ship Spirit of Dana Point and its Maritime Education Coordinator.  He was killed in a traffic accident while riding his motorcycle in Long Beach the evening of June 20.

Ocean Institute Evening Features Musical Maritime Melodrama Enoch Arden

DANA POINT, CA – The Ocean Institute is pleased to welcome pianist Sonya Lee and narrator/actress Melina Kalomas for a musical presentation of Enoch Arden, a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson about a fisherman turned merchant sailor who sailed into misfortune, on Thursday, June 23, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.  Composer Richard Strauss wrote the melodrama in 1897, using the words of the 1864 poem.  The performance will take place in the Institute’s Samueli Hall, beneath GraySea, a juvenile gray whale skeleton.

DANA POINT, CA – The Ocean Institute is pleased to announce that Marty Sorkin of San Clemente has been selected as its 2016 Volunteer of the Year.  He received the honor, explained Ocean Institute President Dori Moorehead, in recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedication to the Institute, the community and his fellow volunteers.  

“Marty has been an extraordinary volunteer,” commented Dori.  “His time has benefitted multiple departments and his positive energy and passion for the Ocean Institute has had ripple effects across the Institute and beyond.”

Ocean Institute Family Science Nights

DANA POINT, CA –­ The Ocean Institute will present four Family Science Nights on Thursdays in 2016: June 30, July 14 & 28 and August 11, 6 – 8 p.m.  Spend a summer evening in our Samueli Conference Center getting “up close and personal” with local scientists.  Each experience will include a presentation by a special guest speaker with alternate activities for kids.  A different topic will be covered each week.

2016 Ocean Institute Summer Programs

Dana Point, CA – Registration is now open for the Ocean Institute’s 2016 week-long summer camps that give children ages 5-17 unique, hands-on opportunities to experience ocean science and maritime history.  Programs begin June 20 and will introduce kids to the mysteries of our oceans, from the tiny world of microscopic plankton to the open seas with large sea creatures such as seals and sea lions, dolphins, sunfish and whales.  Maritime history programs take children back in time to experience the Golden Age of Sail.

Sea of Love

Dana Point, CA – The Ocean Institute is celebrating Valentine’s Day with a “Sea of Love” presentation on Thursday, February 11, 2016, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.  Learn about romance under the sea with our Director of Laboratory Programs, Linda Blanchard, who will discuss reproduction and mating rituals of aquatic life.  This lecture is intended for mature audiences, ages 14 and up.

Underwater Parks Day

Dana Point, CA – The Ocean Institute will join in the celebration of Underwater Parks Day on Saturday, January 16, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Holiday Cruises & Sails at the Ocean Institute

Dana Point, CA – Enjoy a holiday cruise or sail at the Ocean Institute!

The Ocean Institute will offer a “Ho Ho Haul Away” tall ship sail onboard its schooner Spirit of Dana Point on Saturday, December 12, 1-4 p.m.  Sail with Santa, take a turn at the helm, watch the crew fire the gun and spend time with crew members making a holiday keepsake.

Cost is $50 adults, $33 for children ages 4-12.  (Members:  $46 adults, $31 children.)

Spooky Seas Animal Presentations

Dana Point, CA – The Ocean Institute will present Spooky Seas Animal Presentations with live animals from Adventures in Science on Saturday, October 24.  Presentation times are 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  Special guests include spooky spiders and slithering snakes.  Visit our Ecology Center Lab between animal presentations to build your very own Vampire Squid Rocket.  Cost is included in the regular price of admission; Ocean Institute members free.  Weekend hours are 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Deep Diving Submersible, Catamaran Mothership Open for Tours Before Presentation by Chief Pilot Chris Welsh on Sept. 30

Dana Point, CA – The Ocean Institute is pleased to welcome Chris Welsh, chief pilot for Deep Sub LLC, who will offer tours of his deep diving submersible and catamaran mothership on Wednesday, Sept. 30, beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by a presentation on his work. Deep Sub LLC operates a deep diving submersible and mothership capable of going to depths of 36,000 feet; following the ship and sub tours, Welsh will talk about the sub’s design, dive locations, planned exploration and scientific goals.

Ocean Institute Names Dori Dennis Moorehead New President and CEO
Former Executive Director of The California Museum in Sacramento & O.C. Native

Dana Point, CA –­ The Ocean Institute today announced its Board of Directors has named Dori Dennis Moorehead as its new President and Chief Executive Officer after completing a nationwide search initiated earlier this year.  Ms. Moorehead, 45, most recently served as Executive Director of The California Museum in Sacramento, the State of California’s official history museum. She is also an attorney having served earlier in her career as a Judge Advocate General in the U.S. Army.

Ocean Institute Opens to Public Seven Days a Week
Sea Star Stroll Fundraiser to Kick-Off the Grand Opening

Dana Point, CA – On Saturday, May 16, 2015 the Ocean Institute will celebrate the grand opening of Headlands and Beyond: A Hands-On Exploration that will be open to the public seven days a week. These hands-on exhibits complete the Maddie James Seaside Learning Center project. Ocean Institute Welcomes Swiss Family Traveling Around the World on April 11

Dana Point, CA – The Ocean Institute is pleased to welcome a presentation by the Schwörers, a Swiss family sailing, walking and climbing around the world, on Saturday, April 11, noon. The Schwörers are members of the TOP to TOP Global Climate Expedition, and climbed from the highest point on the North American continent, Mt. McKinley/Denali, to the lowest point, Death Valley, using only wind and human power. They offer public presentations to inspire their listeners to preserve the planet.

San Clemente Resident Jim Schmitt Named Ocean Institute’s 2015 Volunteer of the Year

Dana Point, CA – The Ocean Institute is pleased to announce that Jim Schmitt of San Clemente has been selected as its 2015 Volunteer of the Year. Jim has been a volunteer since 1997, and has devoted more than 5,500 hours to the Institute. He has volunteered at the gift shop, for weekend public programs, the information booth and many other roles.
