Thanks to Massen Greene Foundation!

Massen Greene Foundation recently made a generous grant to expand our Watershed and Ocean in Motion outreach programs.  The Watershed Program uses the allure of the ocean to hook ten-year-old students on the importance of protecting the environment from watersheds to waves.  Most of the 2,000 fifth graders are from underserved circumstances and this is their first time seeing the ocean.  The program immerses them in science-based environmental education at sea and in marine labs; they then research an environmental issue in their local watershed and they make presentations on their findings at Kids’ Conference and to civic groups in their communities.  The whole experience is transformative for students – many begin to enjoy science and consider it as an academic pathway for a successful future, and most are inspired to become proactive ocean stewards.

Since 1988, Ocean in Motion has been taking the “ocean” to students who are in underserved schools or who have special needs and cannot navigate sandy and rocky beaches or crashing waves.  The Massen Greene Foundation’s grant will send the traveling laboratory van to younger grades in the same schools as the fifth graders coming to Watershed to create a pipeline of excited and prepared students when it’s their turn for Watershed.
