Family Science Nights
Ages 4–104

Event

Thursdays, 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Spend a summer evening in our Samueli Conference Center getting “up close and personal” with local scientists. Each experience will include a presentation by a special guest speaker with alternate activities for kids. A different topic will be covered each week.

Thursday, June 21: Cuttlefish to Cosmos

Look up at the night sky and you will see our past. Countless stars have shaped our planet and given rise to the incredible varieties of life that surround us. From apes to whales, stars to sea, explore the fascinating biology and behavior that connects all life across space and time.

Thursday, July 19: The Magic of Native Plants

Step into the magical world of native plants with the Ocean Institute. Wave a (plant) wand to discover the mystical uses of native plants and how both humans and animals have benefited from their relationships with native plants. Families will fill their “spell books” with the secrets to Yucca Hand Soap, Yucca Rope key chains, starting their own “sorcerer’s garden” (seed starting), study herbology with leaf print making, and more.

Thursday, August 16: The Wonders of Algae

From dentistry to the deep sea, come explore the wonders of algae. We’ll make our own algal molds and slime our way through chemical science. Families of adorable otter puppets will compete over tasty purple urchins in a trophic cascade event. Take a peek into the ecology of the most powerful group of oxygenators for our world!
