Donors Making Waves: Patagonia + Hobie
Ocean Institute Receives Patagonia Environmental Grant

Post

As well-known leaders in the outdoor industry for environmental advocacy and community enrichment, Patagonia’s waves of positive impact recently reached our Adopt-a-Class program with a $5,000 grant. The Patagonia ‘Environmental Grants Program’ funds organizations that identify and work on the root causes of environmental problems and approach those issues with a commitment to long-term change. This description parallels our goal for the Adopt-A-Class program, which enables underserved students from Title I schools across California to visit the Ocean Institute for hands-on education using ‘nature as the teacher’. The program is truly life-changing for these students, as many have never seen the ocean or been on a boat before. The experience not only provides essential learning opportunities that these children often don’t have access to, but also encourages a love for marine science that motivates them to become life-long learners and passionate advocates for the protection of our planet.

This November, as many of us reflect on the gifts we are thankful for—Ocean Institute recognizes our many donors and community partners who make our valuable educational programs possible. Patagonia’s support will provide over 250 underserved students with the gift of outdoor education and inspire future change-makers and defenders of our oceans. A special thanks to our wonderful friends at Hobie and other local environmentalists who were advocates for Ocean Institute during the application process. We are so grateful for this opportunity to expand our programs, and look forward to giving back through marine science, maritime history and environmental educational programs in the coming year.
