Ocean Institute and Nicholas Endowment partner with GRIP

Ocean Institute has partnered with Nicolas Endowment and Orange County Gang Reduction and Intervention to bring 200 students from eight schools to experience a sailor’s life on the ocean.  Just a day before the Tall Ships Festival is set to start, these students, many who have never visited the ocean, will set sail on The Spirit of Dana Point and other visiting ships and learn what it takes to work on these vessels just as sailor’s decades before did in their ocean quests.

Orange County Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership(OC GRIP) is a law enforcement partnership that identifies at-risk youth and aims to increase school attendance and decrease gang activity. Students identified by OC GRIP as being high-risk for gang exposure and activity are challenged to improve attendance and grades, and show positive behavior year-round.  In doing so, they are rewarded with fun activities such as Los Angeles Angles games and ocean excursions at Ocean Institute.
