Top female scientists will mentor middle and high school students through research projects in marine ecology, oceanography, and conservation

DANA POINT (January 5, 2019)– Registration is now open for the Girls in Ocean Science Conferences presented by Ocean Institute in Dana Point. This one-day event will take place on separate occasions for middle and high school students. Middle school students will attend the conference on Saturday, February 16th and high school students will attend the conference on Saturday, March 16th. Each session will include hands-on workshops and a chance to conduct research in labs and at sea aboard the Ocean Institute’s research vessel, the Sea Explorer.

The conference is designed to demonstrate some of the diverse and exciting opportunities that are available to women who pursue science as a career. Led by 14 visiting female ocean scientists, the Girls in Ocean Science Conference will afford students the opportunity to learn about marine ecology, oceanography, and conservation from experts in the field.

Women remain underrepresented in the science and engineering workforce, although to a lesser degree than in the past. Through conferences like Girls in Ocean Science, young women who love science or are just beginning to show an interest will come away empowered to explore the field further.

Ocean Institute’s mission to use the ocean as a classroom aims to inspire all children to become the next generation of ocean advocates. Girls in Ocean Science is one of many programmatic efforts of the ocean education center to declare the importance of future marine science research and exploration.

The conference takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and registration is required. The cost is $60 per person and $45 for Ocean Institute members. One ticket includes admission to the conference, breakfast, lunch and a t-shirt. A limited number of scholarships are available courtesy of The Steinmetz Foundation and Tiffany & Co. Foundation. Applications for scholarships are due January 14th and recipients will be notified the week of January 21st.
