Ocean Institute offers a variety of docent-led private tour options for groups that range from an exploration of our acquaria to touring our historic tall ship. 

Select from the options below, or ask us about a customized tour to suit your interests. 

Science Field Trip 1.5 hours

Private Tidepool Hike
Ages 6 and up

Have you ever explored the tidepools and wondered what kind of marine life you had found? On your next tidepool adventure, bring an expert from the Ocean Institute with you. 

What you’ll see: Explore the Marine Conservation Area located directly behind the Ocean Institute with our expert guide. Species often found include hermit crabs, mussels, sea stars, and more. Your guide will guide you the best tidepooling area and identify species along the way. 

Maritime Field Trip 45 Minutes

Private Pilgrim Tour
All Ages

Step back in time and explore the journey around Cape Horn as described by Richard Henry Dana in Two Years Before the Mast.

What you’ll see: View the galley, stern, and bow of the ship before heading below decks to the main hold, where the ship’s cargo would have been stored. Explore the ship in detail while learning about the shipboard life of sailors of the past.

Private Ocean Education Center Lab Tour
All Ages

Take a tour of the Ocean Institute’s labs with your own personal docent.

What you’ll see: Labs inside the Ocean Education Center are home to over 100 different species local to southern California. Learn about our unique ecosystem, the animals that live there, and how you can help protect it.
